Resident Wellness

Resident wellness is a priority for our department. Our program seeks to support our residents in a variety of ways throughout the academic year. We schedule at least two Grand Rounds lectures per year around topics relevant to wellness and avoidance of physician burnout.

Each summer, we host a residency-wide retreat at the time of new-intern orientation to help get everyone acquainted! Toward the end of the spring semester, the PGY1-3 classes retreat to a lake or mountain house for hiking, cheese boards, wineries, and bonding. Our outgoing chief class and attending physicians cover the hospital so the junior residents can spend time together!

Each year, we participate in ACOG's Wellness Week with group exercise classes, smoothie breaks, and visits with our well-loved hospital therapy dogs. Each resident is afforded a personal half day while on their L&D Days block each semester. VCU has a responsive and accessible Employee Assistance Program that is available to residents if you find yourself needing a little extra support during your training years. We pride ourselves on the big and small ways we show up to take care of each other!
