Day to Day
The daily schedule changes with each day of the week and with each rotation. Below you will find information to give you an idea for how we spend our busy days. You will see examples of what is scheduled within the department on each day of the week, as well as more detailed examples of a daily schedule on the L&D service and on the Benign Gynecology service.

Board Sign-out The Night PGY-2 is responsible for giving sign out to the oncoming day team.

L&D Rounds Round with your team including residents, faculty, students and nursing on all patients on the L&D floor. Students practicing presenting and we get to know all the patients.

Scheduled Cases As the intern, you are responsible for admitting and initiating any inductions of labor. These patients typically arrive at 7:30, 10:30, 12:30 and 18:00. C-Sections, cerclages and external cephalic versions are scheduled throughout the day as well.

Circumcisions Another PGY-1 role is to perform all desired newborn circumcisions for the nursery. You typically will do this with oversight from your chief resident and attending.

Noon Conference [Monday & Thursday] On Mondays, the chief residents present M&M from the week before. On Thursdays, the PGY-2 & PGY-4 present the upcoming cases for the following week. All residents and faculty are encouraged to attend both conferences.

Board Sign-out The Day PGY-2 is responsible for the group sign-out to the oncoming night team |

Rounds The team meets with the attending to round on the service. Typically, the PGY-1 is responsible for seeing any medical admits from the night before.

Surgery First start cases are at 7:30 and require that patients are checked in and ready to go by 7AM. The domain of the internship is our Ambulatory Care Surgical Center where you will become an expert in hysteroscopy, D&C, vulvar surgery, etc. When you are finished with your own cases for the day, we encourage you to observe cases your upper levels are participating in.

Sign-Out This is your opportunity to sign out your patients to the oncoming night team. They will carry your pager during the night shift and notify you in the morning about any admissions overnight. |
On Thursday mornings we sign out our pagers and L&D phones to the attendings before heading to Grand Rounds and our weekly lectures. This way clinical responsibilities do not divide our attention and our time for structured learning is truly protected.

Grand Rounds The entire department attends our Grand Rounds. One morning of the month this is replaced with our Resident Meeting. This is a private meeting among the residents only and allows an opportunity to hear about program updates as well as discuss any concerns or issues that may arise.

Formal Didactics Our didactic curriculum has been completely re-vamped in the last few years and strategically covers all of the recommended topics for doing well on CREOGS and passing boards. Typically, there are two lectures each day. One lecture is given by a faculty member and the other by a resident with mentorship from the faculty member. This gives us the opportunity to develop our teaching and presentation skills.

Simulation The gynecology team has two hours of formal simulation time on Thursdays. As an intern in simulation you will learn your surgical instruments, prepare to do your first c-section, practice your laparotomy and laparoscopy skills, develop your operative hysteroscopy skills and more. |

Meet Our Postpartum NP Team
|
The VCU Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology is proud to offer dedicated postpartum care through two specialized nurse practitioners who round daily on the postpartum unit. These providers ensure continuity of care, address acute concerns, and support new parents during their hospital stay. In addition to daily rounding, they manage the postpartum pager and respond promptly to urgent issues, providing an extra layer of clinical support and enhancing the overall patient experience. Beyond their clinical contributions, our postpartum nurse practitioners are integral to resident education. They provide hands-on teaching in postpartum management, model effective communication with patients and interdisciplinary teams, and offer real-time feedback that helps residents build confidence and competence in caring for postpartum patients. |
